Experience elsewhere has shown that rail trails attract patronage from people who would not otherwise visit the area, a major boost to regional tourism. The result has been a stimulus to existing small businesses and whole new business opportunities opening up. Several businesses in Captains Flat have closed in the past few years. It is reasonable to expect that rail trail users would provide opportunities for those to re-open or be reinvented. There are currently no businesses in the area catering to cyclists. There will be a demand for cycle repairs, cycle hire and for transport for those who do not wish to ride the round trip in one day. We are also discussing a proposal for ‘Bikes to Bungendore’ which would involve historic trains from Canberra to Bungendore carrying cyclists and their bikes plus walkers who would cover all or part of the rail trail and return to Canberra on the train.
It will be a facility that will enhance community pride. The rail trail could become the major draw card for regional tourism in Palerang. It offers the greatest possibilities for economic boost to the region.
